British American Tobacco teamed up with the MatTek Corporation to conduct the study. MatTek is the maker of human cell models used for lab experiments. They used a “smoking robot” to test the study using tobacco smoke, e-cigarette vapor and regular breathing air.

The cells died after being exposed to the tobacco smoke, but after continuous doses of the vapor from an e-cig, researches said the damage to the lungs was “similar to air”. There will be more tests with different types of e-cigarettes in the future.
